Africa starts to tap solar energy for IT

Solar energy will have a positive impact on rural societies by enabling people to access computers and the Internet, said Paul Zambezi, Ministry of Science and technology permanent secretary, in a recent Zambian workshop on solar-energy technology. A lack of electricity has made ISPs (Internet service providers) and mobile phone service providers hesitant to build capacity in rural areas. As a result, most rural African areas lack Internet facilities.

This was one of the early important markets for PV technologies, and continues to be an important market. Isolated mountaintops and other rural areas are ideal for stand-alone PV systems where maintenance and power accessibility makes PV the ideal technology. These are often large systems, sometimes placed in hybrid applications with propane or other type of generators

The first cellular phone service in Ghana was initiated by Mobitel in 1992. In that year alone, 19,000 Ghanaians owned mobile phones. In 1998 the number of mobile phone users in the country increased to 43,000 and by the middle of 1999 the number increased to 68,000.
Four companies MTN Ghana, which is owned by South Africa's MTN Group; Zain Ghana, which is owned by Kuwait's Zain Group; Vodafone Ghana, which is backed by the UK's Vodafone Group; and Tigo, which is owned by Luxembourg's Millicom   now compete for cellular customers, and usage rose from 22,000 to 132,000 subscribers between 1999 and 2000. Now mobile phone users accounts over 5 million.

Poor to fair system; Internet accessible; many rural communities not yet connected; development of services is underway domestic: primarily microwave radio relay; wireless local loop has been installed international: satellite earth stations - 4 Intelsat (Atlantic Ocean); microwave radio relay link to Panaftel system connects Ghana to its neighbours. Telecommunication systems has not been extended into the rural areas.The country had just over 267,000 fixed lines in service at the end of 2009.  Areas having serious problems are Eastern Region, Central Region, Western Region. Power Transmission in these areas are so poor and do not fulfill the needs of today.
